    Adverbs


     

    The adverb is an invariable word

     

    specifying or modifying a verb, an adjective, or the meaning of another adverb .

     

    Elle court rapidement

    (Rapidement specifies the meaning of the verb courir).

    Il n'est pas très grand.

    (Très modifies the meaning of the adjective grand).

    Nous jouons assez bien.

    (Assez modifies the meaning of the adverb bien).

     

     

     

     

    The different categories of adverbs :

    The adverb can indicate

     

                            The manner : doucement, gentiment, mal, lentement, bien...

                            The place : ici, là, ailleurs, loin, dessus, là-bas, devant, près...

                            The time : hier, bientôt, maintenant, aussitôt, soudain...

                            The quantity : beaucoup, peu, près, trop, plus, moins, un peu, tout...

     

     

     

     

    An adverb can be :

     

    A word : ici, hier, jamais, bien, assez, peu...

    An adverbial phrase   : ne... pas, au fur et à mesure, tout à coup...

     A word ending in -ment: calmement, bruyamment, prudemment...

    The adverb can be a circumstantial complement:

     

                                Of place : nous allons là-bas. (where?)

                                Of time : ils viendront demain. (when ?)

                                Of manner : Luc travaille sérieusement.  (how ?)

     

     

     

     

    Identifying a -ment-type of Adverb  -

    The adverbs ending in  - ment- are built from an adjective :

     

                                  First case : From a  feminine adjective

    Vif => vive => vivement

                                  Second case : From an adjective ending in-ant

    Méchant => méchamment

      Third case : From an adjective ending in -ent

    Violent => violemment.

     

     

     

     

    In the following exercise,  identify each adverb category :

    temps (time), lieu (place), manière (manner), quantité (quantity).
