J'ai été or Je suis allé

    je suis allé, j’ai été

In familiar language, at the compound tenses, we often prefer the verb aller than the verb être.

Bridget  est allée voir Mary ou Bridget a été voir Mary.

In sustained language we prefer using aller when there is an idea of movement even figuratively

Je suis allé à Londres. (Better than j’ai été à Londres).

Je suis allée au bout de mon  rêve

When aller is figuratively taken without idea of movement, we preferentially replace it by être.

Je vais bien aujourd’hui, mais ça déjà été beaucoup mieux.

(and not=> c’est allé déjà mieux).

Exercise: Complete the following sentences with:

j'ai été or je suis allé
