    Imparfait ou passé simple


    Ces deux temps servent à décrire des actions passées.

     

    L'imparfait  est utilisé pour décrire une action qui dure ou qui se répète. Il sert également à décrire des actions simultanées.

    Le passé simple s'utilise pour décrire une action instantanée. Il sert également à décrire des actions qui se succèdent.

     

    Exemples :

    Tous les matins Hélène se levait à sept heures.

    Le quatorze juillet elle alla voir le feu d'artifice.

     

    Dans la phrase :

    'Les enfants jouaient dehors quand leur mère rentra à la maison',

    l'action 'les enfants jouaient ' est commencée et va peut-être continuer,

    alors que l'action 'leur mère rentra à la maison' est instantanée et accomplie.
