    They can be used to compare or express an intensity.

    Autant

    Use autant with verbs.

    Il a  autant de tonus  qu’autrefois.

    Aussi

    Use aussi with adjectives and adverbs

    Il  est toujours aussi impulsif.

    Il travaille aussi bien qu’avant.

     

     Particular case

     

    In a sentence with a past participle used with the auxiliary être  and the past participle acts as both an adjective and a verb, you may use either aussi or autant interchangeably. 

    Il était tout aussi dépassé que nous par les événements.

    Il était tout autant dépassé que nous par les évènements.

     

     

     

    In a sentence with a past participle used with the auxiliary avoir   and the past participle acts as both an adjective and a verb, you must use only  autant.

     

    Ce problème  l’avait autant dépassé que le précédent.
