    Infinitive form

We usually categorize a verb into different groups by its  present infinitive:

¨    Examples : Nathan joue de la flûte jouer

    Charlotte fait du théâtre. faire

From this infinitive form the verb can be classified into  three different groups

The first group : It usually includes the verbs ending in –ER ( except the verb ALLER which has  many exceptions and belongs to the 3rd group)

Aimer, balayer, chanter, envoyer, fermer, manger, passer, payer, promener, regarder, etc.

The second group :  the verbs ending in –IR and ALSO in –ISSANT for their Present Participle

Bénir, compatir, déguerpir, fleurir, grandir, haïr, investir, polir, rougir, rugir, salir, etc.

    • The  third  group : it contains all the other verbs, those which are irregular , the verbs ending in –IR ( but with a different conjugation from the 2nd group) , the verbs ending in –OIR or –RE  and the verb ALLER

Conduire, connaître, dire, dormir, exclure, faire, mettre, plaindre, prendre, résoudre, savoir, vivre, etc.

être and avoir, even if they naturally belong to the 3rd group, have a different classification
