Généralement, il y a deux catégories de noms ou adjectifs masculins qui donnent une terminaison en -elle au féminin.

Réciproquement, un nom ou un adjectif qui se termine en -elle peut donner deux catégories de terminaison au féminin.
1- Les adjectifs en -elle changent -elle en -eau ou -elle. On utilise -eau pour un adjectif prédécé d'un nom commençant par une consonne et -el pour un adjectif prédécé d'une voyelle ou un h muet. Exemple : - Nouvelle => nouveau, nouvel Une nouvelle année, un nouveau chapitre, un nouvel an - Belle => beau, bel Une belle ville, un beau paysage, un bel escalier
Remarque : au pluriel on utilise uniquement -eaux au masculin Exemple : Des nouvelles années, des nouveaux chapitres, des nouveaux ans des bellez villes, des beaux paysages, un beaux escaliers
2- Certains mots en-elle changent uniquement en -eau au masculin et prennent un x au pluriel Par exemple : une chamelle => un chameau une corbelle => un corbeau une chevrelle => un chevreau une jumelle => un jumeau une bedelle => un bedeau une colombelle => un colombeau une lioncelle => un lionceau
3- Certains mots en-elle changent uniquement en -el au masculin et prennent un s au pluriel Par exemple : une criminelle => un criminel une Colonelle => un colonel une contractuelle => un contractuel une intellectuelle => un intellectuel une officielle => un officiel
