SEE (VOIR) and LOOK (REGARDER)
VOIR (SEE)
Main meaning: to perceive with the eyes, to notice the presence of something.
It is passive: your eyes capture an image without necessarily making an effort.
Examples:
Je vois un oiseau dans le ciel. → I see a bird in the sky.
Tu as vu ce film hier ? → Did you see this movie yesterday?
Conjugation used in the exercises:
Present: je vois, tu vois, il voit, nous voyons, vous voyez, ils voient
Past perfect (passé composé): j'ai vu
Imperative: Vois ! Voyez ! Voyons !
REGARDER (LOOK / WATCH)
Main meaning: to deliberately direct your eyes towards something or someone, to observe attentively.
It is active: you make an effort to focus your gaze.
Examples:
Je regarde la télévision. → I am watching TV.
Regarde ce tableau ! → Look at this painting!
Conjugation used in the exercises:
Present: je regarde, tu regardes, il regarde, nous regardons, vous regardez, ils regardent
Past perfect (passé composé): j'ai regardé
Imperative: Regarde ! Regardez ! Regardons !
