L'histoire était réputée terminée à 18H, mais je vois des points de suspension à la dernière entrée. J'essaie d'aller plus loin, mais on dirait que c'est vraiment la dernière participation. (J'ai été plusieurs fois trompée par les changements de pages du site - comme presque chacun d'entre nous d'ailleurs...)

Suzy regardait le paysage. Quelques minutes plus tôt, le train s'était arrêté au milieu de nulle part, et les voyageurs étaient descendus
des wagons et marchaient le long de la rivière pour s'échapper de cette fournaise, quand ... Davy prit ses jambes à son cou car il avait vu
un serpent engloutir son crapaud en désarticulant ses mâchoires alors qu'il s'était arrêté pour admirer un papillon. Il eut bientôt distancé
ses parents qui lui crièrent de revenir immédiatement. Mais pendant ce temps, le contrôleur avait prévenu les voyageurs que le train allait
partir dix minutes plus tard. De loin, Suzy avait bien vu toute cette agitation et avait entendu ces cris d'effroi.2 Elle avait décidé de
rester près du train, mais maintenant elle se faisait du souci et se demandait si ses parents et son frère avait entendu l’annonce... Elle
interpela le contrôleur : "Il faut que le train attende ma famille... "Oui, bien sûr, ne t'inquiète pas." Lui avait-il répondu. Elle avait
retrouvé son calme quand on leur avait apporté des boissons fraîches pour prévenir la déshydratation. Le train ne partirait pas avant que
tous les voyageurs ne soient revenus. Comme des voyageurs s'étaient dispersés, il fallut un certain temps pour que le train parte. Le voisin
de Suzy était toujours absent. Il avait laissé toutes ses affaires sur son siège, y compris son portable, et on ne l'avait pas vu depuis. On
avait même fouillé dans chaque recoin du train. Avait-il pris un bain pour se rafraîchir ? 3 Le train ne repartit qu'après que la police eut
été informée de cette disparition inquiétante. Peu après le départ, Suzy vit un bout de papier qui avait été coincé entre le siège et
l'accoudoir. Elle le prit et déchiffra l'horrible écriture en pattes de mouche de Jeff disant qu'il était parti aux toilettes après avoir bu
l'eau de la rivière... On n'avait pas exploré les toilettes, aussi elle s’y précipita mais n’obtint pas de réponse lorsqu'elle toqua à la porte.
Elle avait continué d'appeler et tambouriner, puis s'était résolue à ouvrir la porte. Les toilettes semblaient avoir été fermées de l'intérieur.
Elle hésita : devait-elle tirer le signal d'alarme ou essayer défoncer la porte ? Il y avait urgence : Jeff avait-il peut-être eu un malaise ?
Tout ce boucan aurait dû le réveiller. À ce moment-là, une annonce dit que le serpent avait été localisé et qu’on lui avait infligé un coup fatal.
Il fallait retrouver Jeff, qui on le sait, avait été heureusement embarqué avec les autres voyageurs. Suzy se demanda si elle devait demander aux contrôleurs de débloquer la porte des toilettes. Des gens avaient commencé à faire la queue ; Suzy a prévenu les contrôleurs d'ouvrir la porte
car quelqu'un y était enfermé et n'avait pas répondu. Quand ils ouvrirent il n’y avait personne, ce qui était surprenant, car la porte avait été verrouillée de l'intérieur. Jeff s'était-il simplement évaporé ? À un moment, il était remonté dans le train, avait écrit son drôle de message
et en était redescendu, sans que personne ait été témoin de sa descente. Comment les contrôleurs pouvaient ils être sûrs que personne n’avait
été oublié ? Une fois de plus, le train entier a été fouillé : chaque WC était fermé et occupé, mais personne ne répondait, tous malades comme
des chiens… Certains soupçonnaient que l'eau qu’on leur avait donnée avait été contaminée mais personne n’osait le dire. Jeff avait probablement
trouvé les toilettes fermées et, malade comme il l'était, il avait préféré quitter le train par ses propres moyens. Et peut-être d'autres
passagers avaient-ils pu faire de même, à la recherche d'une façon de faire leurs besoins. " Oh mon Dieu ! " avaient soupiré les contrôleurs !
"Y a-t-il un médecin parmi vous ? Personne ? Seulement un vétérinaire retraité. Suzy retourna à sa place et sursauta lorsqu'elle vit que la
veste de Jeff avait été suspendue au dossier. Par ailleurs, on avait appris que du bétail empoisonné avait été traité en aval de la rivière,
à cause des mines en amont. Cela pourrait expliquer pourquoi de nombreux voyageurs étaient tombés malades quand le train s'était arrêté pour
la première fois. Leur avait-on servi des boissons polluées ? Tout cela ressemblait à une intoxication collective. Le mystérieux Jeff avait-il
joué un rôle criminel ? Le vétérinaire guidait les autres personnes volontaires pour réanimer, réhydrater, prodiguer les premiers soins. Il alarma
les secours et les hôpitaux. Pour Suzy tout ce tohu-bohu était extraordinaire. Elle n’avait pas imaginé qu’un voyage en train puisse être quelque
chose d'aussi risqué, avec autant de rebondissements ! Le vétérinaire surveillait ses patients et les équipes de secours avaient été déjà envoyées.
Suzy décida de rejoindre ses parents et Davy qui n'avaient pas été empoisonnés et se reposaient dans le wagon qui avait été réservé aux bien portants. Elle leur dit qu'elle avait trouvé la veste de Jeff et leur expliqua pourquoi elle avait considéré ce fait comme étrange, voire suspect. Ils n'avaient aucune idée à ce sujet. Suzy retourna à sa place pour examiner la veste. Peut-être quelque chose d'intéressant avait été laissé dans les poches. Elle avait déjà remarqué que la veste avait été déplacée. Il n'y avait rien dedans. En particulier, le téléphone avait disparu. Où était-il passé ? Avait-il été volé ? Suzy avait regardé sous le siège : il aurait pu y glisser. Elle s'accroupit et découvrit une petite valise qui avait été coincée sous les sièges. À ce moment, une voix dit au-dessus d'elle : "Que cherches-tu jeune fille ?" Suzy sursauta de peur, car elle avait reconnu l'inquiétant Jeff. "Où étiez-vous ?" demanda-t-elle d'une voix tremblante... " Tout le monde pensait que vous aviez disparu à jamais ". Il semblait surpris, dit qu'il était descendu du train après avoir trouvé les toilettes verrouillées et était resté à l'extérieur jusqu'à ce que le train reparte. Il ne savait pas pourquoi il y avait eu autant de foin à propos de lui. Suzy ne comprenait pas non plus. Le train avait été fouillé à fond, non seulement une fois, mais deux. Où pouvait-il s’être caché ? Cela devait être éclairci... Suzy demanda : "Mais après être remonté dans le train, que vous est-il arrivé ?’ Jeff expliqua qu'il s'était installé dans une voiture de 1ère classe parce qu'il y avait moins de monde et il faisait un peu plus frais... Suzy était sceptique... Il avait abandonné toutes ses affaires... Voilà qui avait été risqué, imprudent même... Il dit qu'il n'avait pensé à rien d'autre que
se reposer et, de fait, il avait dormi dans la voiture de première classe... De toute évidence, Jeff avait été entièrement étranger à la contamination
de l'eau... A ce moment-là, son téléphone sonna. Très gêné, il tenta de cacher le nom qui s'était affiché, mais pas assez vite pour empêcher Suzy de voir la photo d'une charmante vieille dame, dont les cheveux avaient été arrangés en une mise en plis compliquée. Une voix avait alors annoncé que
le train allait arriver à Dirtywater-on-Sea, son terminus, et les voyageurs avaient été invités à quitter le train. "Vous ne prenez pas l'appel ? Demanda Suzy. Car elle avait été très intriguée sur qui appelait. Jeff expliqua que la dame était sa maman, qui s'était certainement fait du souci
car il n'avait pas donné de nouvelles. Suzy se sentit déçue, car elle avait espéré que la dame soit la petite amie de Jeff, vu son âge apparent et
ses cheveux grisonnants. Comme elle ne voulait pas paraître indiscrète, elle s'était éloignée un peu pendant qu'il parlait avec « Maman ». Mais elle avait cependant été suffisamment proche pour saisir une conversation qui s'était tenue sur un ton très tendre... Mais ils ne purent parler longtemps, car le train avait ralenti et entrait en gare. Bien que tout n'ait pas reçu d'explication, Suzy était heureuse que le voyage se termine. Elle demanda
à Jeff si la valise qu'elle avait trouvée lui appartenait. "Oh, oui, merci! J'ai failli l'oublier avec toute cette affaire d'intoxication... Il ajouta que la valise était pleine de jolies choses qu'il avait rapportées à sa "Maman"...Suzy lui conseilla de contacter la police, qui le cherchait sans
doute puisque sa disparition avait été signalée. Jeff répondit qu'il le ferait, mais tout d'abord il devait retrouver Maman, qui avait attendu des heures dans un salon de thé. Dès l'arrêt du train, il descendit rapidement et s'éloigna à grandes enjambées. Suzy le suivit, sans égard pour sa
famille qui avait été à sa recherche depuis un certain temps. Elle se précipita dans le salon de thé, mais il n'y était pas. Soit il était déjà
ressorti, soit ce n'était pas le bon salon. Elle allait partir lorsqu'elle vit la dame dont elle avait précisément aperçu le visage sur le téléphone
de Jeff. Suzy hésita à l'aborder. Et pour lui dire quoi ? Elle-même ne comprenait pas pourquoi elle avait suivi Jeff, mais elle ne pouvait s'empêcher
de penser que quelque chose n'allait pas chez lui depuis le début. Elle prit son courage à deux mains. A cet instant, Suzy vit Jeff, qui se dirigeait vers elles. Il venait apparemment de changer de vêtements dans les toilettes ... La vieille dame se leva, disant qu'elle avait été inquiète de la disparition de Jeff, craignant qu'il ne l'ait oubliée... Suzy se sentit rassurée. Bien qu'il se fût comporté bizarrement dans le train, Jeff ne
semblait pas être un malfaiteur. Elle fit comme si elle ne l'avait pas vu et s'apprêtait à quitter le salon de thé lorsqu'elle entendit Jeff
