Hello everyone

Please, could you explain this structure : GET STH DOING or GET+ING VERB

She worked all the afternoon on the car but never got it running.
Or
I'm late, I got talking to Marie. Je suis en retard, j'ai parlé avec Marie ???

Elle a travaillé tout l'après midi sur la voiture mais .... ???

Il s'agit de deux structures un peu différentes :

Get something (or somebody) + ing : parvenir ou pas à faire quelque chose

She worked all the afternoon on the car but never got it running.

Elle a travaillé tout l'après midi sur la voiture mais n'a jamais réussi à la faire démarrer.

Autre exemple:

He is lazy, but I finally got him working = il est paresseux mais j'ai enfin pu le faire travailler.

Get + ing : se mettre à faire quelque chose

I'm late, I got talking to Marie = Je suis en retard (parce que) je me suis mis à bavarder avec Marie.
Dans ce cas, get + ing indique la cause du retard.

Autre exemple :
Stop talking and get working! = Arrêtez de bavarder et mettez-vous au travail !

"I got to talking ..." is an idiom; got to here means that you began to do the action, frequently used with talking or thinking.

If I got it right :

Get + object + ing verb, that's equivalent to, Make +object+ verb (without To)

I can't get the car going = I can't make the car start. ???
Je n'arrive pas à démarrer la voiture???

Am I right?
